THE SPIRIT OF MABEL

It occurred to me were I to walk outside 

on a sunny day in Manhattan in 1904 and yell 

MABEL! At least ten people would turn around 

and say “Yes?” And yet when I tried it today, 

only nine did, and there was no one there and

one was missing.
