1876
I saw a long ago photograph of the face
of the Statue of Liberty. In front of it
was a man with his hands on his hips
wearing a black suit. The sky was overcast.
I am the only man in the world who will stand
in front of an angry woman’s cast iron and copper
face today. I wonder if I should wear my black suit,
and my grey hat?
These are the words he never said, although
he might have said It looks like it might rain.
